Choosing the best juicer for your needs seems like it should be easy, but take another look. There are dozens of juicers on the market, all with different features and price tags. Here's what you need to know so you can decide which is the best juicer for you.
Masticating Juicers
Masticating juicers are typically the most expensive but they have some major benefits over the other juicers on the market. The operate by grinding the fruit to extract more juice that other types of juicers and in the process there's very little waste. As a bonus, you also get more fiber in your juice.
Because masticating juicers operate at a slower RPM there's less oxidation that occurs. This means your juice will have a longer shelf life and retain more nutrients that would otherwise be lost during oxidation. This slower operation also means they can handle fragile, leafy greens better than other machines.
Centrifugal Juicers
Centrifugal juicers are less expensive and they're a little more popular. They work by spinning the fruit at high speed, using centrifugal force to extract the juice. The benefit is that they work a lot faster. But the make less efficient use of your produce because they leave more waste. But, if budget is your concern, they're a really good deal.
If you just want a juicer so you can play with recipes and have some fresh juice occasionally, then this is the juicer for you. Keep in mind though that these aren't built to handle wheatgrass or other green leafy vegetables. If you're more concerned about diet and nutrition, then choose the masticating juicer.
Wheatgrass Juicers
As the name implies, these juicers are designed specifically for wheat grass and other fragile, leafy green vegetables. They have a range of price points and you can often find them on sale. But, for the money, you'll be better off getting a masticating juicer that can handle the wheatgrass and still process other types of produce.
Any type of specialty juicer is going to be more expensive and limited in what you can do with it. Add to that the fact that it's another piece of equipment you're going to have to clean and, well, you can see where I'm going with this. Do yourself a favor and at least step up to the centrifugal juicer so you'll have more options.
Manual Juicers
Manual juicers are exactly what they sound like - you operate them manually. They're usually a lot less expensive then their electric counterparts and they make a lot less noise, too. But think about it. Most people have their fresh juice first thing in the morning. Do you really think a juicer that you have to stand there and crank is the best juicer for you at 6 in the morning?
